Last year, for example, I attended a conference on behalf of a client and laid out some very clear goals: “To find out what other companies are doing to reach Hispanic audiences and to identify potential partners to help my client enter that market.” Having such clarity of purpose helped me narrow down which breakout sessions to attend, which speakers to meet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to introduce myself to them, what information to collect, and what questions to ask fellow participants.
Be sure especially to take advantage of any unique networking opportunities offered at the conference. More and more, organizers are trying to facilitate connections among participants through structured networking events and other creative programs. A conference I attended a few years ago in Washington D.C. offered a dine-around event where participants were divided into small,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pre-determined groups (to separate people from similar companies and professions) and set up for dinner at local restaurants. I shared wine and great food with industry leaders who are still part of my network today.
5) Get the right people to come to you. No matter how hard you work the event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can’t possibly get to every person you need to meet. You can be much more efficient with your time, however, by attracting the right people to you. One way to do this is by asking a question in one of the presentation sessions. But don’t just ask the question. Use a quick five-second intro to preface it.
Networking successfully at a big event like a trade show or conference comes down to taking charge of your own experience by developing a cohesive plan, leveraging all available resources, and using your time wisely.
Second, you have to articulate your request. If there’s a specific person you’d like to meet, say, “I’d love to say hello to Mr. X, would you mind introducing me?” Or, if you’re looking for a specific type of person but don’t have a name, you might say, “I know there are some folks here from ABC Company, what’s the best way to find them?” or “I’m looking for someone in the PR field, is there someone you could introduce me to?”
You can do the same thing. All it takes is some prep work before the conference to pick the keynote or breakout session most likely to attract your biggest target audience, develop your intro and question tied to the topic, and practice so you speak effortlessly and forcefully. Then stand back and watch what happens.
Although Woody Allen once said that 80% of success is just showing up, networking successfully at conferences, trade shows, and conventions takes a little more effort. By just showing up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ll probably still have a fine time, get useful information, and meet some nice people, but a little focus and upfront prep can make the experience more relevant for your needs, and result in a much bigger payoff for your time and investment.
More than 27 million people attend conferences, trade shows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and conventions each year, and according to Meetings & Conventions magazine, the main reason they go is to network. It's no surprise then that in their brochures and on their websites, conference organizers take great pains to stress the fantastic networking opportunities the event provides.
3) Don’t sell. Unless you’re attending a true industry buying event where the purpose is to bring buyers and sellers together to place orders and get deals done, most conferences are set up more for information sharing and connecting. In those cases, people are rarely primed to buy. No one is walking around thinking, “I’m really in the mood to hire a consultant today” or “I’m not leaving until I spend millions on computer software.” So avoid turning your conversations into sales pitches, even if you know for certain that you can help.
Having clear goals makes it easier to hone in on making the right connections and engage in meaningful conversations. Otherwise, your networking efforts will be unfocused and important conversations will go nowhere.
A gentleman in one of my workshops tried this during the Q&A session of a conference seminar. He raised his hand, stood up and said, “My name is Bob Smith with The Mergers & Acquisitions Company (note: name and company changed). We help privately-held businesses find an exit strategy, and my question is…” then he launched into his question. He said that after the session, five people approached him and he got business from three of them. Why? People knew what he did, his question was smart, and he sounded confident. He never would have found those specific people on his own in the room of 200, so he did something to make them seek him out. They self-selected, making his job a lot easier.
6) Ask organizers for help. Conference organizers want you to meet your objectives so you’ll come back next year and hopefully bring some colleagues as well, so don’t be shy about enlisting their help. It’s a simple two-step process. First, you have to find one of them. One place to look is the registration desk, or, even better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if the conference is big enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Speaker’s Lounge, where speakers check in and hang out before and after their talks. You can also see them in the back of the seminar room making sure everything is going smoothly. Often, they’ll be holding walkie talkies.

The purpose is to make an impression as a helpful resource, someone with whom they’d like to continue the conversation, not as a used car salesman ready to pounce.

However, as a networker, I know that conversations during breaks and meals and in the hallway can be extremely valuable for building relationships that can help your business.

It may be a given that you need to make an appearance every year at the big trade show for your industry, but you also should broaden to other events your target market might attend. The more tightly defined the conference is, the chances that your competitors will be there too will be slim, and the more likely you’ll be able to differentiate yourself. Leg Kicks: This is an exercise that strengthens your abdominal muscles and raises your pulse rate. You start this exercise by laying down on the floor and bending slightly at the waist (placing your body in pike position). Bend one leg to help you hold your balance and straighten your top leg and bring it forward as far as you can. That one phrase seemed to get stuck in my mind and I have been meditating on it ever since. It is also true in life. Hesitation can lead to devastation there too. You need to take that opportunity. If you have decided to go after a specific goal, and you have counted the cost that it is going to cost you to achieve that goal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and considered all the pros and cons and decided that it is a worthwhile goal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then you must commit yourself one hundred percent to it. You need to take that risk.
Nothing in life that is worthwhile comes without risks. You need to set your sails and go out into the deep waters. As someone once said: “A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for”. And neither were you. You were made by God to explore all the possibilities of life and discover your own world. Yes the chance is there that the storms of life will wreck your boat, but you’ve got to take the chance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ve got to turn your boat into the direction of the deep waters and leave the shore because it is the only way. As Christopher Columbus, the great discoverer said: “You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore”
Hesitation leads to devastation. That was the main principle of an article I read recently on mountain biking. It is one of the most important principles when riding a technical mountain bike route. If you decided to ride the difficult, sandy or rocky or muddy section of the route instead of pushing or carrying your bike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like many of the others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you must “take it by the horns” and go through it. If you hesitate, even just for a moment, you can come down hard and fast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and yes, depending on the circumstances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the result could easily be devastating. You could break an arm or a leg or seriously damage your bike. Why? Because you hesitated.
We all have those voices inside us that tell us that we are not good enough, that we are not going to make it. We need to shut them down and take control of ourselves and tune in to that other voice inside us that will convince us that we are good enough. We need to do that because it can lead to hesitation and as we know by now hesitation can lead to devastation. It is William Shakespeare who said: “Our doubts are traitors, and they make us loose what we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”
3. Procrastination
Someone once said you spell faith RISK. The risk is still there that you can fail, but it is impossible to succeed if you don’t have the courage to try. As Wayne Gretzky a well known ice-hockey player said, he missed hundred percent of the shots that he never took. You can only succeed if you do it. Fear can make you hesitate and that can lead to the devastation of your dreams and goals.
Finally, there is one other important principle in successfully negotiating a difficult obstacle on a mountain bike. Speed is your friend. In most cases it is much easier to negotiate the difficult section of the route if you do it with speed. The same applies for most things in life. Don’t hesitate, if you have made the commitment, do it with everything you have and the risk of your dreams and goals being devastated becomes infinitely smaller.
If you don’t take control over your doubt thoughts it will very quickly lead to fear. Fear can be a very destructive force. It can stop you from even starting out in the first place. It is true that there is a risk involved in everything that you start,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that implies that there is a possibility that you might fail. In fact most of the important things in life require taking a risk and the nature of a risk is that it doesn’t always work out. But you have to have faith. Faith is the opposite of fear. Fear and faith cannot exist together, if you start believing that you can do it, fear will disappear.
The only real cure for fear is courage. Do it afraid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], feel the fear, but do it anyway. If you keep on doing the thing you fear, the death of fear is certain. The life that you are living will expand or shrink in proportion to the measure of courage you display.
Although there are more I just want to mention three things that can lead to hesitation:
The longer you wait before you start doing what you need to do the bigger is the chance that your doubts and fears will get the better of you. Procrastination leads to hesitation, and hesitation leads to devastation. You have to take action immediately after you have made the decision to do it. The longer you wait the more difficult it becomes. A parachute instructor once said that it isn’t the jump that is bad for the inexperienced jumpers, it’s the waiting to jump that gets to them.

People spend millions, if not billions of dollars, each year in the quest for a flat stomach. Right now there are about 200 or more ab exercise devices out there. There's the ab do-it, the ab rock-it, the ab roller, the ab dolly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and so many more. You would think that with all of these amazing new products that most people would be walking around with that nice, lean mid-section they've always wanted. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
The most effective way of flattening your stomach is a combination of strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).
